is an international Film and TV director who works fluently in English, Spanish, and French. And with “BLOOD AND WATER”, he’s proven he can also deliver an entire series in Cantonese and Mandarin.
It was a long road to make his first mark: literally walking illegally across every border from Nicaragua to the U.S., shooting the groundbreaking Nat Geo doc “WETBACK: The Undocumented Documentary”.
By becoming the first person to capture a real crossing of the Rio Grande on camera and filming illegal migrants on their real-life, perilous journey atop trains and across rivers and deserts as they struggled to reach the elusive “American Dream”, Felipe helped their plight become part of our common consciousness, years before it was.
His foray into cinematography peaked when his camera work on “BLOOD & FURY: America’s Civil War” earned him an EMMY nomination and another at the CSC Awards.
He followed with his directorial debut: KIDNAP CAPITAL. Feeding off the heart-wrenching stories he witnessed first-hand while shooting “Wetback”, he turned a small indie production model into an award-winning feature film: a gutting character piece that earned praise on a successful international festival tour after premiering at the Shanghai IFF and at FANTASIA.
He then moved to TV, excelling at world-building new Series by directing Pilots and taking on complete seasons of shows as the sole director. He’s become a go-to when shows need someone to think outside of the box and elevate their on-screen value.
Felipe leans on his innate ability to connect with actors and their process and on his technical experience to give his projects a look and feel that goes beyond the words on the page. Excellent at crafting work where every aspect of the filmmaking process comes together within a cohesive vision, he creates empowering character moments that anchor the narrative and supports them with striking, impacting visuals as he tells stories through his unique, outsider’s POV of the world.
After ending 2022 with his 3rd DGC AWARD nomination in 4 years, Felipe began 2023 finishing post on new episodes of Netflix’s fan-fave “VIRGIN RIVER” and Hulu’s “THE HARDY BOYS”, just as he began production on his TV movie “NEVER TOO LATE TO CELEBRATE”. He’s directed on ABC’s “THE GOOD DOCTOR”, Netflix’s “SLASHER: Guilty Party”, and was called to take over and re-energize the 2nd season of “BLOOD AND WATER”, guiding it to Best Drama nominations at the CSA’s and Leo Awards and Best Director at the DGC Awards.
He’s also helmed all the episodes of the spin-off “FIRE & ICE” and conceptualized the on-screen tone and visual language of “RUBY AND THE WELL” and CityTV’s viewership-record-setting show “HUDSON & REX”.
